What Is UHMWPE Yarn?
Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) yarn is made from high-strength UHMWPE filaments. The raw material typically has a molecular weight in the millions of grams per mole. During production, the polymer is generally processed through gel spinning and high-ratio drawing. This helps align the molecular chains along the fiber axis, producing lightweight fibers with high tensile strength.
UHMWPE plied yarn is made by combining and twisting two or more single yarns. Twisting helps hold the yarn structure together and affects how the yarn performs during weaving, braiding, sewing, and other processing. S-twist or Z-twist can be selected to suit the yarn direction, machine settings, and requirements of the finished product.
UHMWPE yarn has a low density and very low moisture absorption, making it suitable for ropes, fishing nets, cut-resistant textiles, and other industrial products. Its low weight can help reduce the weight of finished products, while its low moisture absorption helps the yarn remain stable in humid conditions. Low moisture absorption does not, by itself, make a fabric or finished product waterproof.
